the writer, thinker, feeler, and believer behind Breakupward.
And I help you breakupward so you can fear less and love greater.
My credentials and educational backstory if you please:
After graduating from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU, I received my MFA in nonfiction writing from CalArts. Then, while applying and interviewing for PhD programs in clinical psychology, I began a year ICF certified program in Solution-Focused Life Coaching at Erickson Coaching International.
Fast forward and I’ve returned to NYC in the summer of 2014 to enter the clinical psychology program at the New School for Social Research. Here I am thinking I’ve got seven more years of academia and training in front of me, only to find myself there, after so much effort, entirely unfulfilled.
Suddenly, I saw that what had been driving me to earn a doctorate was fear — this anxiety that I wasn’t enough yet, that I needed three more letters after my name to finally be valuable, to finally be heard.
Somehow I couldn’t overlook the tragedy of this all. That, for most of my twenties, the carrot dangling just in front of me had been fear. I couldn’t let that be my story anymore.
That’s when I had this eureka moment. My background in life coaching, psychology, and nonfiction writing had always been devoted to understanding fear and relationships.
I had this flash of insight where I put it all together: the only thing I’ve never been afraid of is vulnerability. I’ve never held back on sharing my story and being in love.
That’s when I said it, “I’m a Breakup Coach.” I encourage people to love and let go fearlessly.
Once I completed my coaching certification and began introducing myself as a breakup coach that’s when the conversations began pouring in, validating both my passion for this niche topic and the need. The momentum built and for the first time in forever I truly felt purposeful, valuable, and daring. Perhaps what convinced me the most was that for the first time in forever everything I was saying and everything I was doing all felt natural. I listened to my intuition and withdrew from the clinical psychology program. I never imagined I could be as courageous as that.
And so, my entrepreneurial journey as a breakup coach began.
What transpired quickly thereafter is a story for the books.
